Five-time Grammy Award-winning Renée Fleming opens Piedmont Opera's 50th Anniversary Season with an extraordinary live concert experience drawn from her acclaimed collaboration with National Geographic. Combining music, imagery, and storytelling, the program explores humanity's relationship with the natural world and examines themes of environmental change, scientific discovery, and our shared future.
More than a traditional recital, this immersive performance invites audiences to experience the intersection of art and science through one of opera's most beloved voices.
The concert will be presented at Salem Academy and College, the nation's oldest educational institution for women, whose historic campus provides a fitting setting for an evening that celebrates discovery, learning, and the enduring connection between culture and knowledge.

Renée Fleming is internationally celebrated for her vocal and dramatic artistry, as well as her dedicated advocacy for the powerful impacts of the creative arts in health. A 2023 Kennedy Center Honoree and winner of five Grammy awards and the US National Medal of Arts, she has sung for momentous occasions from the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony to the Diamond Jubilee for Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. In 2008, she became the first woman in the 125-year history of the Metropolitan Opera to solo headline an opening night gala, and in 2014, she became the first classical artist ever to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the Super Bowl. Renée’s new album The Fiddle and the Drum was released May 29. A collaboration with 19-time Grammy winning banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck, the album celebrates Appalachian bluegrass and folk music, with contributions from featured artists Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, Jerry Douglas, Aoife O’Donovan, Sierra Hull, and Sarah Jarosz. Renée’s concert program, Voice of Nature: the Anthropocene, inspired by her 2023 Grammy -winning album, features an original film created by the National Geographic Society. This fall, she will bring her acclaimed portrayal of Pat Nixon in Nixon in China to the Washington National Opera. In 2024 at the Metropolitan Opera, she reprised her role in The Hours, an opera based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and award-winning film.
Known for bringing new audiences to classical music and opera, Fleming has sung not only with Luciano Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli, but also with Elton John, Paul Simon, Sting, Josh Groban, Dead and Company, and Joan Baez. Her voice is featured on the soundtracks of Best Picture Oscar winners The Shape of Water and The Lord of the Rings.
Fleming’s anthology Music and Mind: Harnessing the Arts for Health and Wellness was published in 2024. A prominent advocate for research at the intersection of arts, health, and neuroscience, she created a live program called Music and Mind, which she has presented in more than 70 cities around the world, earning Research!America’s Rosenfeld Award for Impact on Public Opinion and Harvard Medical School’s David Mahoney Neuroscience Prize. She is now an advisor for major initiatives in this field, including the NeuroArts Blueprint at Johns Hopkins University. She launched the Renée Fleming NeuroArts Investigator Awards, funding interdisciplinary research projects by early career scientists in collaboration with creative artists.
Co-Artistic Director of the Aspen Opera Center and VocalArts at the Aspen Music Festival, Fleming is also Advisor for Special Projects at LA Opera and Artist Development Advisor at Wolf Trap Opera. MYRA HUANG, PIANO
Myra Huang is regarded as one of the preeminent collaborative
pianists of her generation. She is a trusted partner to many of today’s
most distinguished singers, including Fleur Barron, Lawrence
Brownlee, Sasha Cooke, Renée Fleming, Thomas Hampson, Will
Liverman, Erin Morley, Nicholas Phan, and Roderick Williams, and
appears regularly on the world’s leading concert stages. Her artistic
partnerships span generations and genres, united by a shared
commitment to storytelling through music. Acclaimed by Opera
News as “one of the top accompanists of her generation” and
described by The New York Times as “a coloristic tour de force,”
Huang’s Grammy®-nominated recordings Gods and Monsters
(2018) and Clairières (2020) with tenor Nicholas Phan mark her as
one of the preeminent recording artists of her generation.
Her career unfolds at the intersection of recital, opera, and
mentorship. Huang is Head of Music for the Lindemann Young
Artist Development Program at The Metropolitan Opera, Head of
Music of Aspen Opera Theater Vocal Arts at the Aspen Music
Festival, and a faculty member at The Manhattan School of Music.
She is an active presence on the international stage as an adjudicator
and master teacher, giving masterclasses around the world; in these
roles, she mentors young singers and pianists, shaping not only their
musicianship but their artistic values. She has served as music staff
at New York City Opera, Washington National Opera, Houston
Grand Opera, and The Palau De Les Arts in Valencia, Spain.
Huang has become one of the most sought-after collaborative
